Chapter Twelve

It had been a few days since she’d seen Liam after his declaration to make sure Lucas never bothered her again. Every morning, she was out of her bed and peeking out of her window. She didn’t know if it was to see if Lucas was parked out front or hoped Liam would be. Disappointment and relief swept through her each time when it turned out to be neither.

Rory had been generous enough to give a few days off to recuperate from her ordeal. But today, she was opening with Maurice. The silent baker would probably be there before her, but she wanted to pull her weight anyway since she’d not been at work for a few days. Hurriedly, she dressed and hit the front door, locked it, made her way to the elevator—which she didn’t have to wait for--then headed to her car. The familiarity that washed over her as she drove toward Sugar, No Cream brought a sense of relaxation to her. It had taken so long for things just to be normal.

She turned down Lana’s offer to stay with her for a few days until everything blew over. She told Lana she’d done enough for her. It was time Rena handled things on her own. Next time she saw Lucas, she’d let him know his bullying tactics wouldn’t work on her anymore. Rena didn’t know where this surge of strength came from, but she would do whatever it took to hold on to it. She liked herself now. She liked the fire in Liam’s eyes when she finally stopped cowering around him, too. It was like he was proud of her or something. Hell, she was proud of herself too.

She was becoming the woman she was always meant to be. Her mother didn’t raise her to take shit from shitty men. Rena had just gotten caught up in what she believed was love. She wouldn’t make the same mistake twice.

Rena pulled into her parking space next to Maurice’s truck and switched off the ignition. Rena pulled her curls high on her head in a tight bun, then fiddled with the Bobby pins in the cupholder of her console, pushing them through her hair to hold it in place. She pulled the visor down and checked herself in the mirror, rubbing her lips together to ensure the lip gloss she applied was still present. Rena didn’t care about how she looked for work before, but she hoped a certain moody Murphy brother would be there sometime today.

Pushing her door open, she stepped out feeling today was going to be one of those days where the unexpected would happen, but it would still be a good day. She couldn’t help a small glance over her shoulder in the early morning hours. Rena felt relieved when she found the street and parking lot empty besides her and Maurice’s vehicles. She bounced up the steps and through the door into the café. She locked the door behind her.

Rena, like always, deposited her things into her locker, then hit the kitchen’s swinging door.
